  • Whether using seed or sod, always begin by thoroughly preparing the soil. For best results, incorporate 2-3 inches of compost or other organic matter into the soil. Till to a depth of 6-8 inches. Level the area with a rake and roll.
  • Set the spreader at #7 and go over the area both directions with the grass seed.
  • Change the spreader to #5 setting and apply the fertilizer one direction.
  • Rake the area lightly.
  • Apply the mulch at 50# per 1000 sq. ft.
  • Water, letting the mulch pellets swell, then wait until the surface dries.
  • Fill the roller 1/3 full of water and pull it (don't push) over the area to press the seed into the soil.
  • Keep the newly planted area moist for 3 weeks. Do not allow it to dry out, and be sure there is no standing water.
  • Mow the new grass as soon as possible.
  • Do not use any weed control until at least the third mowing.
  • Wait 6-8 weeks (or until growth begins to slow) before reapplying fertilizer. We recommend a well balanced fertilizer such as Northwest Lawn Starter to encourage root growth.

These are general recommendations and setting.

Northwest Seed lawn packages are available in a wide selection of grass varieties and blends.  This includes 25# of premium lawn seed, 25# of Northwest Lawn Starter fertilizer 12-24-12, 250# of mulch, and the free use of a roller and spreader as well as all the expert advise you need.
